Customs seize 732 bags of rice, 11 vehicles, others in three months 2019
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Niger/Kwara/Kogi Area Command on Thursday said that it intercepted no fewer than seven hundred and thirty-two (732) bags of rice, eleven (11) vehicles and one hundred and seventy-five (175) litres of vegetable oil between January and March this year.
The Customs Area Comptroller for Niger, Kwara and Kogi states, Mr. Yusuf Abba Kassim, made this disclosure while addressing a press conference on Thursday in Minna, the Niger state capital.
Kassim while speaking also disclosed that the command generated a total of eight hundred and fourteen million, seven hundred and fifty-five thousand, five hundred and sixty-three Naira eighty-six kobo (N814, 755, 563.86) in three months.
He maintained that the command during the same period recorded a total seizure of 16 comprising rice, vegetable oil and used vehicles with a total DPV put at Nineteen Million One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Seven Hundred Naira (19, 120,700).
Kassim said, “On enforcing compliance of smuggling activities, the command recorded a total seizure of sixteen (16) comprising of rice, vegetable oil and used vehicles.
“The breakdown is as follows-: Seven hundred and thirty-two (732) bags of rice 50kg each with duty paid value (DPV) of 13, 510,400, eleven (11) assorted used vehicles with duty paid value (DPV) of five million, five hundred and thirty-five thousand, three hundred Naira (5, 535, 300), One hundred and Seventy Five (175) liters of Vegetable oil with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of 84,000. The Total DPV for all the seizures is put at Nineteen Million One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Seven Hundred Naira (19, 120,700)”.
He said, “You are all welcome to the Niger/Kwara/Kogi Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service. This is my first press briefing of the year 2019 as the Customs Area Controller.
“I recognize the critical role the media can play especially in the area of sensitization and enlightenment to all our stakeholders and the society at large. This is why I have called this briefing to partner with the media in order to achieve willful compliance from the public as well as to showcase what the Command is doing, our activities and the success recorded within the first three month of the year,
“The Command has two (2) approved border stations, Chikanda in Kwara State and Babanna in Niger State with the core function of suppressing smuggling; The Command equally engages in trade facilitation and Border Security and it is working hard to bring other excisable factories within its axis under Customs Control through market surveillance.
“In spite of lull in business activities due to 2019 general elections, between January to March this year, the Command has generated Eight Hundred and Fourteen Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty Five thousand, Five hundred and Sixty Three Naira Eighty Six kobo (N814, 755, 563.86) which is the highest in the past three years, even when the Command is yet to receive official communication of the revenue target for the fiscal year 2019.
“In 2016, 2017, 2018 the Command generated Five Hundred and Thirty Nine Million, One Hundred and Thirty Six thousand, Ninety Eight Naira, Fifty Six Kobo (N 539, 136, 098.56) Four Hundred and Seventeen Million, Three Hundred and Thirty Six Thousand Two Hundred and sixty Six Naira Sixty Seven Kobo (N 417, 336, 266. 67) Three Hundred and Eighty Seven Million Two Hundred and Eleven Thousand Four Hundred and Seventeen Naira Forty Five Kobo (N 387, 211, 417.45) respectively
“In January 2019, the Command generated 210, 466,789.18 which surpass with 94, 567, 317.31 of same month last year. In February this year which was an election month, we generated 4, 307,586.65 with difference of 142, 215, 970.9. By March we returned and recovered from heavy impact of the elections and generated 599,981,188.03 which surpass that of March last year with 475, 192,799.
“To this end, I would like to thank the Management of Nigeria Customs Service at the National level for creating an atmosphere conducive for the success recorded so far.
“I would like to send a note of warning to economic saboteur to steer clear of Niger/Kwara/Kogi area Command and engage in meaningful venture or else they will meet their Waterloo. My officers are properly trained and motivated to carry out their official duty without fear or favour. I urged officers to shun bribery and corruption or they will be shown the way out.
“Finally, the Command is determined to surpass the target set that might be for it by the management. It is our hope that our joint efforts in this year will yield better result as we anticipate going beyond the revenue achieved in the year 2018”.

The Nigeria customs service in Niger state has improved efforts towards revenue generation and tackling of smuggling activities.
The Area Controller in charge of Niger/Kwara/Kogi Command, Yusuf Abba Kasim stated this while receiving a meritorious award from Foreign Press.
According to him the zonal command which comprise of Niger, kwara, kogi was doing a lot towards checking illegal import of contraband goods.
Comptroller Yusuf Kasim explained that the Area command generated revenue from excise factories such as international tobacco company in illorin kwara state and other extant factories.
He said the command last year generated two billion four hundred and eight thousand five hundred and fifty four Naira.
The customs controller added that between January and February this year , the command generated five hundred and twenty one million, eight hundred and ninety nine thousand and nine naira.
In a remark earlier , the representative of the president of the foreign press Mr. Amed zakari, extolled the virtues of controller of customs Yusuf Abba Kasim for his commitment of the Customs in the zone.
He noted that apart from improving the image of customs personnel in Niger, kwara and kogi command, the custom boss has instilled discipline in the workforce.
Amed zakari assured that the foreign press would continue to identify with Nigeria customs service and other organizations towards improved economy of the nation.
He explained that the award bestowed on comptroller Yusuf Abba Kasim was in recognition of his tireless and patriotic efforts towards national development.

I have never seen a gentleman, simple with good character like Alh Yusuf Abba Kasim. It’s amazing that he does not restrict anybody from seeing him while in office or at home, Usman said.
The man Abba Kasim a Former Customs area comptroller in charge of Kano and Kisses command, has been commended for his effort at improving on revenue generation while in Kano State.
Usman Sani is also a customs office from Jigawa office further stated that comptroller Abba Kasim is a man with integrity, mission and vision and his open door policy has given us access to present meaningful demand and complaints that was why he (kasim) achieved a lot.
Usman Stressed the need of the comptroller general of customs rtd col Hamid Ibrahim Ali to give the newly posted comptroller of customs in charge of Niger, Kwara and Kogi area command Alh Yusuf Abba Kasim all the necessary support to discharge his duties appropriately, he pleaded.
We will always remain obedient and loyal to you and posterity will judge you positively as you remain a symbol of unity, perseverance, doggedness and moral rectitude, Usman added.
Meanwhile, he called on the newly Kano area comptroller to emulate the good leadership qualities as demostrated by Alh Yusuf Abba Kasim and ensure the discharge of their duties responsibly and with Fear of Allah.

The newly appointed customs comptroller in charge of Kwara, Kogi and Niger Command, Yusuf Abba Kasim, has been described as a gentleman,transparent and corrupt free-leader,who committed to serve people heartedly. The statement made by Usman Sani, a junior customs officer with Jigawa command. Sani said, Abba Kasim deserved the commendation made on him from different people, which include kano business tycoons, customs, government officials and individuals, due to his leadership style, simplicity, open door policy during his tenure as the Controller Kano/Jigawa Command. “I have never meet a customs officer with integrity like Abba Kasim, that’s why the customs image redeemed”. He lamented that with the existence of people like Abba Kasim in Nigeria customes service, there will be a rapid development. Usman further stated that, many people are not happy whe he was deployed to another command, most especially the junior customs officers and the customs license clearing agents, many cried shading tears. He appeal to other customs to emulate Comptroller Abba Kasim.

The Nigeria customs area controller Niger/Kwara/Kogi command, Comptroller Yusuf Abba Kasim honor with an award of excellence from two media house, Moonlight news and Sahara Hausa as most outstanding customs officer of the year 2018.
Presenting the award, the leader of the delegation Mr. Joseph Adams, said the award bestowed on comptroller Abba Kasim is due to his hardworking and selfless services over the years provide sufficient justification for the conferment of the prestigious award on him.
He said, ckano/jigawa command during Abba Kasim witnessed tremendous improvement which was equally visible in revenue generation which surpassed the target for the year, whereby the command generated revenue amounting to #13.5 billion as against the allocated revenue target by the management for the year 2017, which is #10 billion , “this is a tremendous achievement to Nigerian customs service”, it’s one of the reasons the editorial board of the two media house recognized Abba Kasim and bestowed the meritorious award on him”.
Mr. Joseph called on other area controllers to emulate the good leadership qualities as demonstrated by Abba Kasim and ensure the discharge of their responsibility and with the fear of God.
Responding after receiving the award, the area controller, Abba Kasim, said, he would continue to work hard to ensure adequate policing of the command border to prevent smuggling.
He said the award bestowed on him by the media, will not only encourage, but it will also boost the morale of customs to greater human services.
“Media practitioners are a partner in progress, people should know the value of the media for their immense contribution to the socio-economic development worldwide”.
Role of the media in the country is crucial to the survival and oneness of the county”.
Abba Kasim endures the media that his command will prevent illegal importation of illicit drugs, fairly use vehicles and other preventive items into the country.
The area controller dedicated the award to his command, and Nigeria customs service and also commended the effort of the comptroller general of customs (CGC), Col. Hamid Ali, for putting in place necessary administration and result oriented programme since assumption in office.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Niger/Kogi Area Command has intercepted a tanker meant for petroleum products but loaded with foreign rice smuggled into the country.
The diesel tanker with registration number RBC-05 ZS was intercepted at the Niger State end of the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, near Dikko junction.
Briefing newsmen on the development and other seizures recorded by the command, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Yusuf Abba-Kassim, said smugglers are devising desperate means to frustrate the federal government’s efforts in checking the prevalence of expired imported rice with its hazardous health implications.
He however said the Nigeria Customs is determined and will continue to beat the smugglers in their game through new strategies that have already been put in place.
He said the command also intercepted another truck loaded with 950 50kg bags of imported rice and nine bales of used clothing, as well as a Toyota Corolla car conveying 135 bags of imported rice.
Other seizures made at different locations within the command’s area of coverage within the month of October include 397 bags of imported rice hidden in a forest by smugglers; two Toyota Rav4 cars; four Toyota Corolla; one Peugeot 207 and one Mazda Premacy car,” the comptroller said.
